A journey that began in September 2015 reached a major milestone on December 7, 2020, when finalists of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE submitted data to the competition judges. Sponsored by NRG (a leading integrated power company in the U.S.) and Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), the Carbon XPRIZE is a cross-border US$20 million competition to develop breakthrough technologies to convert CO2 emissions into usable products. The COSIA sponsorship is funded and managed by a joint industry project (JIP) consisting of six oil sands companies led by ConocoPhillips.

“ConocoPhillips is proud of our role in this extraordinary competition that is making strides to meaningfully contribute to the global challenge of reducing CO2 emissions,” says Kirk Johnson, president, CPC.

In early December, COSIA launched a campaign to highlight the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and the work underway by teams testing their carbon utilization technologies at the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre (ACCTC) in Calgary.

The winners of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE – one in the natural gas track and one in the coal track – will be announced in the first half of 2021.
