With its remote location in Canada’s boreal forest, managing waste at Surmont, a ConocoPhillips Canada in situ oil sands joint venture with Total E&P Canada, isn’t as easy as dragging a green or blue cart to the curb.

To help reduce waste — or eliminate it altogether — the Surmont team formed the multi-disciplinary Operations Waste and Liability Strategy Team, more affectionately known as the OWLS. From cardboard to kitchen scraps, sewage to sludge, the OWLS team is leading the company in managing waste more efficiently and effectively.

Their work includes some industry firsts, including the use of a technology to turn organic waste into biomass. Find out more through the videos below.
