James Makowecki is vice president, Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainable Development for ConocoPhillips Canada. 

With more than 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Makowecki started his career operating wells and conducting field maintenance in the conventional heavy oil and natural gas fields of northeast Alberta. After graduating from university, he held roles in environmental protection, reclamation and remediation, security and safety.

In 2009, Makowecki joined TAQA North as head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment for their operations in Canada and the United States. In this role, he focused on building a leadership-driven safety culture to deliver world-class safety performance.

Makowecki joined ConocoPhillips in 2013 as manager, Oil Sands HSE, with a focus on the safe delivery of the Surmont Phase 2 expansion. With his support and guidance, ConocoPhillips has made significant strides in advancing and operationalizing a culture of high reliability (HRO).

In September 2019 he assumed his current role, with responsibility for health, safety, environmental and liability operations, regulatory, government and external relations and sustainable development. Makowecki graduated from Concordia University of Edmonton with a B.Sc. in Environmental Science.
